To provide the present and former central government employees and their dependents with a comprehensive medical coverage, the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) was rolled out in 1954, by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The treatments under the CGHS scheme can be availed in all CGHS-covered cities. As of 2025, the scheme extends to more than 80 cities across India, including Dehradun, Ahmedabad, Agartala, Goa, Chennai, Gangtok, Lucknow, Kolkata, Imphal, and Hyderabad. The scheme is self-funded, with employees contributing a fixed amount every month, which varies based on their salary. Pensioners who wish to continue availing CGHS services can either make an annual contribution or opt for a one-time contribution for 10 years to enjoy lifetime benefits.
